However, to qualify for SSI disability benefits or Social Security disability for depression, the patient has to be diagnosed as having severe depression. This means having at least five of these symptoms: 

  • Decreased interest in many activities
  • Difficulty thinking or concentrating
  • Depressed mood
  • A disturbance of appetite that leads to a change in weight
  • Guilty or worthless feelings
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Slowing of reactions and physical movement, such as speech, having physical agitation, and more
  • Having thoughts of suicide and death

Along with needing to obtain a diagnosis of at least five of the symptoms listed above, there will also be functional criteria that have to be met showing that there are losses of your abilities because of the mental disorder of depression. This means an extreme limitation for one or more of the following areas: 

  • Interactions with others
  • Remembering, understanding, or trying to apply information
  • Adapting to try to manage oneself
  • Maintaining pace, concentrating, or persisting on specific tasks that need to be performed
